I’m Kiran Bedi: Naam to suna hoga!

This pretty much sums up the persona who is synonymous with tough-looking, Iron lady, boss lady,..etc. A name that inspired numerous filmmakers to base their movies and TV series on the life of this legendary woman.

Kiran Bedi is the first woman to join the Indian Police Service (IPS) and is credited with introducing prison reform in India.

As a young girl, she was very much interested in extracurricular activities, participated in NCC and was a national tennis champion.

Her interaction with senior civil servants at the Service Club in Amritsar inspired her to take up public service as a career.  When she started her police training at the National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, she was the only woman in a batch of 80 men!

After her posting, she became the first woman to lead the all-male contingent of the Delhi Police at the Republic Day Parade in 1975.

What stands out throughout her illustrious career is her ability to stand strong against political pressure, taking tough decisions and commitment to work. She had the audacity to stop a vehicle belonging to the PMO for wrong parking!

In recognition of her service, she has received numerous awards and accolades and winning Ramon Magsasay, considered the Nobel prize of Asia, is a feather in her cap.

Post retirement also, she continues to serve the society through her NGO, has written numerous books, is a TEDX speaker and till last year she served as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
