Unfortunately, the old saying don’t judge a book by its cover doesn’t apply to people. It is in our very nature to infer personalities traits about a person based on their dress, or how they look. These first impressions can be very powerful—especially in the job realm. If a hiring manager makes a decision about a person’s abilities to do a job in the first ten seconds of an interview, then what is the point of the interview?
There is a lot of scientific research about these types of biases, from what we infer from just reading a name on a resume, to what we infer based on clothes or shoes. Learning what these are and what you can do to combat them will not only help you make quality hires, but keep you from excluding potential candidates just based on first impression. EBI took a look a 25 of the most stunning first impression biases that exist.
