The Three Benefits of NAPLAN

Is your child ready for the NAPLAN? Are you hiring the services of a private tutor for your child’s NAPLAN tutoring? Nelson Mandela has once said that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Mandela is correct on this and claims that people become better citizens when they are provided with quality education.

Education is also a priority to all the governments of the world. However, countries must be able to assess the quality of education they are providing. Because of this, governments have established standardized testing to analyze the status of their education. In Australia, an example of these standardized tests is called NAPLAN.

What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN is short for the National Assessment Plan – Literacy and Numeracy and is a standardized test given to students belonging to years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The NAPLAN assesses the student’s capabilities in educational subject areas such as grammar, numeracy, spelling, and writing. NAPLAN was first introduced in 2008 and is believed to give the following benefits:

Improve the Quality of Education in School

Schools differ in the way they teach their students. Some schools adopt different strategies in teaching their students. One school may adopt a different teaching approach from another school with the belief that this approach is best suited for their students. However, without a standardized assessment program, it is impossible to determine if these schools are meeting the educational expectations that the government has on them.

The results of the NAPLAN standardized test may be used to identify any problems with Australia’s educational system. NAPLAN serves as a diagnostic tool to assess whether or not schools are meeting national educational objectives, whatever their teaching approaches may be. Since the NAPLAN is given for students at years 3, 5, 7, and 9, NAPLAN results can be used to assess a particular student’s progress over time and further assess if the schools are doing their part in providing quality education to students. NAPLAN results may also benefit the parents since they will get an idea on their children’s capabilities in literacy and numeracy skills and determine if their children will need NAPLAN tutoring in the future.

Transparency

The results of the NAPLAN tests are made transparent and made available to those who want to know the results. This transparency of NAPLAN results will benefit parents because they will have a picture of how their child is doing as compared to the national standards. Likewise, the NAPLAN results will show which individual schools are underperforming and have NAPLAN results which fall below the national average.

Accountability

There is truth in the saying that it takes a village to educate a child. A child’s education is affected by the school, the home, and the community, the child, belongs to. The transparency of the NAPLAN results will help identify who is accountable in terms of students’ capabilities in literacy and numeracy skills.

For example, if a particular student has very low NAPLAN results amid the high NAPLAN results of the entire school; then the parents may be held accountable for the student’s low performance. The parents must then find new ways, such as hiring for NAPLAN tutoring for the student to do better in the next NAPLAN testing. However, if the entire school shows low NAPLAN results, then the school should system should be held accountable for the results.

The NAPLAN is an effective tool in assessing the current status of Australia’s educational system.
