Business Process Management Meets Artificial Intelligence

By | Danila

Business Process Management through the years

BPM before the BPM software

Oldschool Business Process Management is highly dependant on the human approach to establish newer more efficient processes to handle repetitive and important tasks in a business. This requires a lot of manual research, as well as setting up processes based on human decisions. The moderation of the outcome is also dependant on the personal approach.

As humans have a fundamental tendency to be biased, and while even with this flaw the BPM approach was successful, the results were far from what was desired.

Business Process Management now: efficiently aligning the business to customers needs

This is where Software steps in. Automating certain processes upon inputting initial data makes the experience much more consistent. An algorithm will make the same conclusion with the same information regardless of mood, weather, personal preference. This helps to create a much more consistent and efficient experience both for the employees and clients

How would Artificial Intelligence affect BPM?

Big Data enables AI to affect business processes

By definition, Big Data refers to :

“Processing extremely large data sets that may be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions. “

And this is precisely how AI will come in handy when it comes to business processes. When establishing an optimization of a business process, it is an absolute must to be able to utilize the data available while deciding what changes are needed and how they should be executed.

Being able to input years and years of data and only work with the summary allows for a much faster BPM execution. Analyzing not only results but also patterns in human behaviour allows creating processes that are then executable and familiar to the people who are meant to carry them out. This way the software tool assists the employees, rather than overwhelm them by forcing them to conduct their work in a way that seems efficient in the calculation but actually causes delay as is unnatural to humans.

AI and big data are responsible for better and better predictions

Along with being able to generate predictions quicker, as a product of analyzing enormous amounts of data quickly, the AI involvement in BPM also allows to make better and more accurate predictions. The results, unlike when processed by people, are not biased but are based on statistics and facts.

Working with spot-on information severely limits the risk for shot-in-the-dark attempts at efficiency. This allows more time to test and optimize the method that was initially developed.

Decision-makers are able to make more educated choices

BPM while intended to benefit an organization as a whole, is really dependant on the approach and the direction that decision-makers want to focus on. Naturally, this has its own risks, as often decision-makers are no longer a direct part of the team carrying out the business’ service. They often occupy a more managerial role, and as such their understanding of what the process is and should be can easily be warped by a business perspective.

By providing decision-makers with accurate up-to-date data tightly summarized allows them to take into account all factors – not only those they are directly or indirectly familiar with.

How could it all work out?

Artificial intelligence is not-so-slowly, but very surely creeping into every aspect of software development. So it really is no surprise we will be seeing more and more of it in the business aspect of the industry.  The truth is that this is a technology that has great potential to optimize the business process management in a way that is not only profitable but sustainable and employee-oriented as well.

The ripple effect can provide better conditions for work, where rather than carrying out repetitive and redundant tasks, that can be subbed by software, employees can do so much more in terms of innovation. What makes a successful business is making the most of each tool – let the BPM software to optimize certain processes mechanically and allow employees to unleash their skills in a way no machine can.
