Background: The New Education Policy has outlined multiple initiatives to transform the higher education sector of the country. One of the aspects outlined in the policy revolve around bringing in skills-based education and more industry-academia collaborations.

In this regard, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the “professors of practice” (POP) initiative to enable people with significant industry experience and achievements to contribute to academic course development, ensure future-ready courses, teach specialised disciplines in line with industry requirements, and formalise more collaboration opportunities between academia and industry.
