Forget Work-Life Balance. Try Achieving Work-Life Blend Instead.

In an age of side hustles and flexible work arrangements are becoming widespread, the line between our professional and personal lives has never been blurrier. This makes the concept of work-life balance seem even more elusive. The truth is, long before people worked from home or juggled multiple side projects, work-life balance remained difficult to achieve. It’s a goal that requires conscious and consistent effort, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

So perhaps organizations and employees need to look at it another way. The team at Ultimate Software came up with a new concept after surveying a group of employees. They found that that the majority of employees aren’t achieving balance, but instead, are striving for a “blend” that takes into account their personal obligations. Whether that means leaving work at 4 p.m. to take kids home, making doctor’s appointments at their desk, or picking up dry-cleaning on a lunch break, these scenarios point to a different, more humane work system.
