How many experiments did you make in 2017?

This was the headline and question that showed up on my twitter feed as an article (https://medium.com/the-mission/forget-about-the-10-000-hour-rule-7b7a39343523) few days ago that has triggered questions, lot of thoughts and now this, my publication on LinkedIn.

My reaction to this was immediate, replied with a number to what I defined as ‘experiments’ as compared to various other trials one takes in day to day life. Especially the various trials I am going through setting up my coaching practice in a green learning zone Infinity, in North Bengaluru.

A place dedicated to learning and creating eco-friendly solutions for a green planet. The categories of focus are re-use, re-cycle old ideas, waste management or just try something in the free time that aids the cause of reducing the carbon in nature. The theme of nature and my experiments with work has been ever evolving having started my consulting journey almost six years ago, every new trial or should I say a deliberate experiment made me learn something new or ideate something newer. At Infinity we always have a project with a status “work in progress”.

Coming back to experiments; beyond my answer to the question on Twitter and the reply thereafter, suddenly I am drawn to look back ‘how many experiments’ in 2017 or in my working experience spanning almost two decades and I see many. A parallel thought worth mentioning was design of experiments or DoE as we Quality practitioners love to call it, which then leads to terms such as value, root causes, solution design, operational definitions, measures etc,. The next thought was perception or what is generally perceived of a word like ‘experiment’.
