Nine months ago we committed to “breaking” HR at Cisco. We have been on a journey that has included eliminating performance management rankings, embracing Moments that Matter and driving change in a new agile environment. About two weeks ago I came together with more than 800 Cisco employees in Cisco’s first ever HR Breakathon where we asked teams to solve HR’s “little-big” problems in a hackathon style.
During 24 hours of high energy collaboration using video and Cisco Spark to connect people worldwide, our participants presented more than 100 creative solutions. We came away with some game changing ideas in four categories: 1) Our best road into the future (with an idea called “Analytics Breakthrough” looking at predictive analytics for HR), 2) The best idea we can implement soon (with an idea called “Digitizing Talent Development,” 3) The best idea to bring Cisco’s People Deal to life (which blends the digital and human touch through the YouBelong@Cisco app and a virtual concierge for new employees), and 4) The way cool idea (with an app called “Ask Alex” designed to deliver fast, personalized information).
I am energized by the thoughtfulness and creativity of the ideas from our first HR Breakthon. It was so powerful to have such diverse teams come together, both within HR and from our business partners, to identify and solve those things that can hinder our momentum.
Stay tuned for more Cisco HR breaks (coming soon!), and let me know what “little-big” HR innovative ideas you are working on.
