The Importance of Diversity in Tech Leadership

It has long been known that diversity in the workforce made for more successful companies.

A 2018 report from McKinsey, “Delivering through diversity”, built on similar research from 2014 and found that companies that had, and actively accommodated, a diverse workforce were 33% more likely to outperform less diverse rivals.

While early efforts to address diversity, particular in the tech sector, tended to focus on gender and ethnicity, research and experience since then has shown that diversity now means all manner of things: age, experience, background, culture, and education, as well as ethnicity and gender.

Furthermore, there is growing evidence to suggest that digital transformation and innovation ambitions will depend on actively encouraging and accommodating a diverse workforce, and critically, in the c-suite too.

Since 2018, digital transformation efforts have grown and matured with the understanding that while goals are set, efforts are ongoing, all to the backdrop of rapidly accelerating market and digital change.
