5 Tips on How to Be a Better Remote Team Leader

By | Andre Oentoro | Founder of Breadnbeyond

The worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 has changed most companies’ working systems to working remotely. However, remotely managing a team to stay active and productive can be a considerable challenge, even for the best team leaders.

As a leader, you are responsible for looking after the team not only as co-workers but as people. It can be challenging for some people to adapt to the new working system.

Additional factors such as children at home, parental care, and various other things become part of the daily life of workers while working from home. Employees must remain in leadership and be capable of supporting the team through solid online communication.

Thus, the role of the team leader is crucial to maintain the company’s culture, performance, and success. Here are six tips on how to be a better remote team leader:

1. Schedule Daily Check-ins

Scheduling daily check-ins are essential to maintain a sense of community in your team while ensuring that the project goes according to plan.

It also helps team leaders get projects on time and manage the employees effectively. Team leaders can reaffirm the team’s roadmap and ensure alignment of priorities.

In addition, you can also use virtual meetings to schedule daily check-ins that are more effective. It helps ensure the alignment of priorities and projects and makes planning easier.

2. Define Your Expectations and Goals

Remote employees operate in a different office environment than the rest of your staff, but expectations and goals for work outcomes should not be different. Ensure your team sets clear expectations and plans to get the best results.

So, try to be transparent and give the same equal treatment to remote teams and employees in the office. Some of your expectations for remote employees may differ, so be open up with other employees.

3. Use Tools to Make Work Efficient

Going digital means you must be prepared to choose the technology that powers how you best manage your remote team. You can leverage some best tools like project management and video conferencing to help you work more efficiently and effectively.

Companies can use several best project management tools today to manage their projects, such as Asana, Trello, or Monday.com. These tools help you and your team to collaborate efficiently to work on a specific project.

In addition, you also need to choose a video conferencing platform that can meet your business needs and goals, like Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc.

These tools allow you to have a video call meeting and present various types of videos like presentation videos, explainer videos, product videos, etc. For example, you run a blockchain company that held a webinar event. You can share Zoom blockchain videos to help your audience understand your product or services.

4. Be Open For Communication

Communication is an integral part of remote work management. However, it is also the most challenging task to carry out in the work environment. Therefore, the team leader must always build good communication between fellow teams.

You can also overcome bottlenecks by setting specific times to communicate with all team members on the same platform. Encourage all members to take part in this exercise.

Regular communication reduces loneliness from working alone. It also allows you to follow up on the work progress of each individual.

5. Provide Flexibility

Team leaders must train their patience and understanding as we continue to work from home. Every employee’s work environment is not only different from before, but now some other factors and benefits must be accounted for.

There may be team members who get distracted, which affects their productivity. There are several things that remote workers sometimes can’t avoid at home, like kids running around, online games, cleaning the house, taking calls with a crib in the background, or even neighbors making noises.

Therefore, create a supportive environment for remote workers by treating them like human beings. Flexibility is also about managing your own time and still getting your work done.

Takeaway

Wherever you and your team are, ensure to always treat the remote team the same as employees who work in the office. On the other hand, you should also continue to control their performance regularly to ensure that your remote employees are working correctly.

Therefore, the team leader plays an essential role in the team’s welfare and the business’s success. You can implement the five tips mentioned above to help you be a better remote team leader. It’s time to gather your team and perform the project well.
