PayU’s Second Innings Program: Bringing Talented Women Back Into the Workplace

By | Namrata Harish | www.jobsforher.com

Can there be anything more rewarding for women than the opportunity to go back to work after a career break?

Many women take breaks from their careers and the reasons can be many. Whether it is for marriage, starting a family, relocating to a different place, caring for the elderly or even to upskill themselves, women in India freely and willingly put their careers on the backburner for years to fulfill their responsibilities.

However, how many of them actually think that going back to work is an option? Most women don’t consider their responsibilities a lifelong commitment, but still hesitate to return to the workforce.

Women as talent

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy states that 2.4 million women took a career break in 2017, but less than a quarter of the same number is actively looking for jobs again.

On the other side, more organisations are now looking at hiring women at the end of their career breaks as part of their diversity hiring initiatives.

This is where companies like PayU come in. India’s leading online payment solutions provider has been leading the way in implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives across its offices.

Second Innings

With the Second Innings program, PayU is collaborating with JobsForHer to hire women professionals on a career break ready to come back to work. PayU has carved out 15+ roles in the organisation exclusively for women returning to work.

As part of this initiative, PayU extends specific job opportunities across verticals to these women across its offices, so as to provide them a platform to restart their career with the company.

The women will be assigned a workplace ‘buddy’ for a month from the existing team, to ease their journey as they transit back into professional workplaces.

Here’s how it works:

  • Women who want to rejoin work will be hired at PayU as trainees for the initial 6 months
  • At the end of their 6 months’ probation period, their employment can be confirmed, based on their performance
  • Leaders are also given the power to hire full-time employees directly from this pool of women, if the candidate is suitable and matches all the requirements of the job

PayU is committed to diversity and inclusion at the highest leadership levels, addressing the gender gap across all levels of the workforce and at all stages — from hiring and recruitment to evaluation and promotion.

Some of PayU’s existing initiatives include giving employees twice the bonus for referring a women candidate as the bonus for referring a male candidate. This program has had a very successful response with over 300 referrals coming in at a record pace.

PayU is also committed to addressing the gender gap in the workforce which occurs when experienced women employees take a sabbatical from work for a few years.

The HR team at PayU also participated in JobsForHer’s exclusive career fair and conference for women — HerRising — held in Bangalore on September 7, 2019.

PayU had an exclusive space to meet more than 2,000 women across their career journeys, and interacted with more than 400 of them.

JobsForHer has always championed the cause of women wanting to restart their careers, and guides talented women professionals online through the offerings on our website, as well as offline through a variety of hiring and networking events.

PayU and JobsForHer together focus on gender diversity as a starting point to making the organisation more inclusive.
