MUMBAI: It’s been good going for the Class of 2018 at the Indian Institutes of Technology so far: till mid-August, the budding engineers have received more job offers than their immediate seniors. And final placements haven’t even started.
Pre-placement offers at leading IITs including Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Hyderabad as of this month have shot up by 33% to 85% from a year earlier, indicating that more students are likely to have jobs in hand before the final placements kick off in December.
IIT Bombay, too, said it has seen a jump in the number of PPOs, with over 59 PPOs and eight pre-placement interviews so far.
“IITs are likely to see a record number of pre-placement offers this year, based on the initial trends,” said Kaustubha Mohanty, head of the centre for career development at IIT Guwahati, which has received over 60 PPOs till now, up from around 45 same time last year.
“The feedback we are getting from companies is that they will be ramping up offers through the PPO route.”
PPOs come in at the IITs till the end of October, which means there are still over two months for more offers to pour in. While the previous batch was unlucky because hiring was hit in the aftermath of demonetisation and rising protectionism in the US, campus officials said there are two primary reasons for the sharp increase in pre-placement offers this year.
