How AstraZeneca India brought down its women attrition rate by 50%, ETHRWorld

Highlights
- AstraZeneca has a staff strength of 83,000 employees globally and 3,500 employees in India.
- The gender diversity at the associate level in the company stands close to 20 per cent and at the leadership level it is about 16 per cent.
- The women attrition level in the organisation has seen a 50 per cent drop this year, from 30 per cent in 2021 to 15 per cent in 2023.
- The company has around 540 sales representatives across India, of which 80 are women.
- Female hiring in the organisation contributed to more than 60 per cent of the overall hiring as of August 2023.
Just like most STEM careers, the pharmaceutical industry also has disproportionate representation of women professionals. A report by Mercer India reveals that out of the 49.5 million-strong pharma workforce, only 11 per cent are women. And, the statistics vary with respect to the sectors. For instance, R&D has 17 per cent female representation, manufacturing has 12 per cent, sales and marketing has a mere five per cent, while corporate functions stand at 21 per cent.
