Panaji: To achieve a sustainable policy shift to favour recruitment of persons with disabilities (PwDs), the change must start from the boardroom, said stakeholders from the corporate sector. Getting the senior leadership’s buy-in is vital not just for PwDs but it can also benefit the organisation’s processes and work culture.

Employing PwDs can bring new perspectives to the workplace and, if executed well, bring surprising returns to the company, said experts from the industry.

“This is the right thing to do and it is good for business because it brings diverse perspectives into the workplace, which helps better your business and that’s a core belief that we have,” said Liju Thomas, director for HR at Amazon India. “The conversations need to start at the boardrooms and the leadership level.”

In Mumbai’s Fort area, Amazon started a silent delivery station where operations and deliveries are executed by individuals who are unable to hear and speak.

Several organisations have made an attempt to include PwDs in their workforce, with these initiatives being shared during a panel discussion hosted by GCCI on employing PwDs. Social welfare minister Subhash Phal Dessai, who was present for the discussion, said that PwDs comprise 8-10% of the population.
