Learning Quotient

This article is not about measuring Learning Quotient. It is about the deep desire of learning exhibited by ordinary people to great Leaders in the world.

I started my career in a Government owned bank in late 1970s. The branch I worked was in a rural setting in the coastal belt of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. A branch with six staff members including the Manager. The local people visited the bank for meager Gulf remittance withdrawal or for Gold loan. Sizable number of them where illiterate and thumb impression was their signature for all bank transactions. We embarked on a small project to make them literate to the level of putting their signature for bank transactions. We could see the spark of learning agility in the eyes of those old men and women. Most of them opted for church cross symbol or om as their signature. We could see the pride on the face of this poor people when they moved out of thumb impression to signature. Later some of them enrolled for adult education programme. We just touched their learning desire.

Akio Toyota the Head of Toyota Corporation while addressing students of BABSON College, his Alma mater, during its centenary celebrations was stressing on the point of learning something new every day. He explained how he took the challenge to become expert in car at the age of 52 when he took over the leadership of Toyota. He went on to say about several hours of driving and automobile knowledge acquisition he under took to be knowledgeable with his engineers.

Bill Gates while writing a tribute about his beloved father William H Gates ,who left for eternal abode, submitted that he has learned from his wisdom, kindness and humility.

Life long learning is the hall mark of human development.
