Working from Home.. Flexibility vs Productivity

Most companies are now edging towards employee friendly policies which help the employee to not only flourish professionally but also manage their personal lives with equal ease. One such policy which has resulted in a fair bit of conjecture is the “Work from Home” policy. A lot of service and consulting companies are divided on the relevance and the benefits created from this policy, however, quite a few have gone forward and implemented this policy with a lot of ease. More than at an organization level, this policy is administered basis the thought process of one’s immediate supervisor in the organization.

Many a manager might debate that work is most efficiently done while sitting in office, in an isolated cubicle or with the team around you, while many forward thinking managers are willing to trust their subordinates to manage work while even being seated in a personal environment filled with homely distractions. While viewpoints on which working style leads to maximum productivity might differ, however, a certain amount of flexibility can only help in driving output. Because, after a certain stage in one’s career, a correct attitude begets professionalism, not the immediate habitat.

With reference to a support role or a consulting profile in a service company, here are a few point of views from an employee and employer’s perspective helping with the case.

From an employee’s point of view:

·       One might have their maximum work related discussions over phone calls with people sitting in multiple geographies. He or she might not always be working with the people who sit with them in the same location.

·       One would always be working on weekends and holidays, at any odd hours, when there is any kind of client deliverable, hence invariably working from home.
