How to Land a Career in IT and Tech

By | Sierra Powell

When it comes to landing a career in IT, there are plenty of options. You could become a software developer, network engineer, or project manager, to name a few. But how do you know which one is best for you? What skills do you need? And how can you get started? Here are the top tips for landing a job in tech and IT:

1. Find Your Passion

The first thing you need to do is figure out what fascinates you about this industry. It can be as simple as wanting to help people or building something from scratch. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that you enjoy doing so that it doesn’t feel like work when you’re doing it. You might have an idea of what kind of work would best suit your skills and interests, or maybe you have no idea. If so, don’t worry! The best way to figure out what job will suit you is by trying different things and seeing what sticks. If there is something that gets your blood pumping and makes your heart sing, then that may be the path for you (even if it’s not directly related to computers).

2. Understand Your Skill Set

Many people think they need to have an advanced degree in computer science and engineering to get into the field — but this isn’t true! All you need is a good understanding of how computers work, which can be achieved by taking classes in high school or college (or even online). If that’s not enough, some companies will train new employees on the job so they can learn more about their specific job duties and responsibilities.

3. Network with Others in the Industry

Networking is an essential part of getting a job in IT because it helps you develop contacts who may be able to refer you for open positions at their company or recommend you for another position elsewhere in their network. When networking, don’t limit yourself to just talking with people at conferences or professional events — connect with people through social media so that when there’s an opportunity for them to refer someone for an open position at their company, they’ll think of you first!

4. Have a Good Attitude About it All, and Don’t be Afraid of Change

IT is a field that changes rapidly, and you’ll need to stay on top of the latest developments. This can mean taking classes or training on your own, but you should also be open to new ideas and willing to learn from anyone with something to offer you. IT pros have to be flexible because technology is constantly changing. If you get stuck in one approach or method, you might soon find yourself out of a job. It’s better to try new things and learn from them than to stick with what doesn’t work, so try not to be too rigid in your thinking when it comes to IT.

5. Obtain Certifications

Gaining a certification can be an essential step to help you break into the field. Certifications are also an excellent way for companies to see their skill level in certain areas. Learning how to code, how to troubleshoot networks and security issues, how to operate databases and more are all skills that you can gain through certification programs. In addition, you can enroll in TOGAF training and acquire the skills needed for a career in IT and tech. Many different certifications are available for IT professionals, so research what might be best for your desired position.

6. Get Experience in Different Areas of IT

It’s essential to gain experience in different areas of technology to understand how each area works together and how all the pieces fit together. You can choose which area interests you most and focus on gaining experience before moving on to something else. For example, if you’re interested in developing apps for mobile devices and tablets, then getting some hands-on experience with Android development is essential before jumping headfirst into iOS development.

The competition is fierce when you’re starting out in a new career. Landing your first job can be overwhelming – especially in a field as competitive as IT and tech. With so many people vying for a handful of desirable positions, it can feel like you need to be the best of the best to get your foot in the door. This is a thriving career path that can be exercised in the workplace, the home, or on your terms. Set yourself up for success by learning more about the potential careers that await you.
