In a slight reprieve to engineering colleges grappling with one of the worst-ever placement seasons, top software services exporters such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCLTech and Accenture have either made or are on the verge of giving job offers to graduates from the Class of 2024.

At VIT Vellore, almost 10% of the batch (9,000 students) have secured jobs, courtesy TCS. This has raised hopes at other campuses, including VIT, who are expecting visits from more companies in the coming weeks, said officials at engineering colleges.

IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS are vital for engineering colleges as they tend to make large hirings, ranging from a few hundreds to thousands, usually in September.

“TCS, like many other IT services companies, used to come in September-October. We thought it would not visit at all…it is a big relief for our campus that it made its visit and closed recruitment in the first week of February,” said Dr N Venkata Sastry, director, career centre, at SRM Institute of Science and Technology.
