What are the different types of engineering?

Firstly, we’ve outlined a few of the different types of engineers working across the world to create and improve some of the most important systems, products, and devices.

  • Mechanical engineering

One of the broadest, most traditional types of engineering, mechanical engineering looks at the manufacture of mechanical systems. Students of mechanical engineering cover modules in technical drawing, mechanical design, thermodynamics, and more.

  • Electrical engineering

Electrical and electronic engineering concentrate on the practical application of electrical power. While electrical engineers focus on the supply of power and large-scale production, electronics engineers work on much smaller circuits, like those found on an Arduino or family computer.

  • Civil engineering

Major infrastructure projects are designed and developed by civil engineers. This can be undertaken on a large scale: for example, for national transport systems or supply networks.

  • Chemical engineering

Courses for chemical engineering at university are amongst the most competitive in the world, attracting huge talent. This type of engineering uses chemical and biological processes to create new, purpose-built materials or substances.

  • Computer engineering

Computer engineers are the architects and designers of computing hardware and software. This branch of engineering combines computer science with electrical engineering.

  • Aerospace engineering

Lastly, this exciting branch of engineering covers the research, development, construction, science, and technology of different kinds of aircraft. Astronautical engineering focuses on spacecraft and the practical study of space.
