One of the biggest challenges in these ESG times, of course, is how to justify the use of water for Holi celebrations.

As an HR, I love Holi because for a change no one is talking about Rangolis. Because this year, most of the fights are when is Holi, rather than why is Holi. Now, we have an expression, “Bura na mano Holi hai!” Unfortunately, our D&I mascot, Chuckles the diversity clown took this a little too seriously and has been throwing rainbow-coloured balloons at the CHRO. But personally, I appreciate a festival where we can see everyone in their true colours outside of a Teams meeting for a change.

To avoid internal discontent from turning into colourful violence on the Holi celebration day, I have ordered all employees to acquire their colours from our CSR’s approved oppressed vendors. When I questioned the presence of black when I had ordered white, I was told this black identifies as a white and my questioning was perpetuating the cycle of system discrimination against coloured colours. I was very impressed by this and have signed up the employees for a compulsory sensitivity course with them. It is optional for me, of course, because I have far more serious oppressions to identify with as an oppressor.Given this is the year of recession and layoffs, I did try to cut costs by holding a fire walking exercise for the employees across the Holi fire itself.
