Work generation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme surged in December to fourth highest in the fiscal as muted farm activities compelled rural workforce to fall back on the scheme.
Government data showed 18.1 million rural households got work under the scheme in December compared to 15.8 million in November, a growth of 14.5% while the person days work generated under MGNREGA stood at 236.8 million vis-a-vis 203 million in November, an increase of 16.6%.
The only three months that witnessed higher household work generation in the fiscal year were 18.6 million in April, 26.2 million in May and 27.5 million in June. These months also showed higher person days work as well.
