Work under MGNREGS falls 7% in FY22

However, it is 36.5% higher than pre-pandemic period, showing high dependence on the scheme for livelihood

Work generation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) fell 7.1% in 2021-22 compared to that in 2020-21, when the first wave of Covid-19 struck India, leading to stringent restrictions, but was 36.5% higher than the pre-pandemic level of 2019-20. This showed the growing dependence on the employment guarantee scheme for livelihood and ongoing stress in the labour market, said experts.
