In India, retail is the second largest employer after agriculture. However, the number of people with disabilities employed in the top listed retail and QSR sector is still less than 1% of their total workforce.

This is despite the number doubling over last year with most companies seeing a rise in the percentage of people employed with disabilities in FY23.

According to the ministry of social justice and empowerment, the last Census in 2011 noted 2.21% of the Indian population with disabilities.

“People with disabilities are believed to have relatively less attrition rate, are more focussed and in the job for a longer period of time in the retail sector,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, chief executive at the Retailers Association of India.
