The stars tell our stories, guide our way, and quietly mark time. They inspire artists and compel scientists. The shared heritage of the night sky is a universal, ephemeral natural resource—and we are losing it, one star at a time. Yet there is hope for saving the night sky, and along with it, something of ourselves. Megan Pickett is a professor of physics at Lawrence University, a small liberal arts college in Appleton, WI. She earned a BA in physics at Cornell University and a PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics at Indiana University, Bloomington, and arrived at Lawrence after four years as a research fellow at NASA Ames and seven years teaching at Valpraiso and Purdue
